Queer Space Making as Resistance
What happens when we insert drag queens and kings into creative worlds and futures that have historically excluded us? Is the world complete without queers in it? These questions form the foundation of my artistic practice. I build and write (other)worlds in experimental, speculative, and futuristic visions that explore the queer, alternative, and trans experience as central forces reshaping what worlds can become rather than accepting them as afterthoughts.
My work interrogates whether queer-coded characters in speculative media are enough to represent the vibrance of queer culture and joy that is traditionally oppressed and silenced by dominant culture. Through worldbuilding and immersive design, I create vital sites for queer and trans space-taking, thrusting queer, trans, nonbinary, and asexual beings into magical realms, futuristic cities, and dystopian Earth. More than just representation, this work is world-making as resistance.
Since founding the art collective Ex Corpse in 2018, I have transformed these materials into experimental entertainment at themed Live Action Role Playing festivals and community drag shows. Our Nonbinary drag show at the Cyberpunk festival each spring and our Wasted drag show at the Post Apocalyptic festival each fall exemplifies this practice: an act of queer space-making into narratives and spaces that they are otherwise often absent from. I also produce queer music videos that navigate queer surrealism for underground queer music artists, extending these worlds beyond the stage into digital and sonic spaces.
